About Tim B. Walker

“Photography, for me, is something like treasure hunting, looking for art in the everyday and the mundane, lying out in the open and waiting for someone to assign it significance.”

Most of my professional life and career has been spent in design, and the lion’s share of that working in my own firm established in 1992. I’m currently one of three principals in DOXA / VANTAGE, a Fayetteville, Arkansas based brand design and marketing firm, serving as its chief creative officer.

That long career in design has of course involved the planning, art direction, and selection of photography for my daily work as a creative director, but making photographs myself has always been a natural part of my life. Evolving from a form of visual note-taking and information gathering, it has, in more recent years, become a form of exploration and self expression, another way of observing and attempting to make sense of the world around me. That attempt is ongoing and never truly resolved, but a source of continual satisfaction in the pursuit.

Photography, for me, is something like treasure hunting, looking for art in the everyday and the mundane, lying out in the open and waiting for someone to assign it significance. I suppose it’s quite debatable whether an attempt to mark something as significant by photographing it actually assigns it any such significance, but I’m drawn to the idea of inviting the observation and the questioning of it.

The influence of design is present in my photographs in terms of both subject matter and composition. I’m naturally drawn to typography as it appears in the world in various forms. I rarely make photographs of people, choosing instead to yield to my introverted nature and focus on subjects from whom I feel no obligation to seek permission.

I work mostly with very simple rangefinder cameras, a style of photography I find very pure and lacking in distractions, although I’m equally interested in both film and digital photographs. I prefer to move through the world and daily life with one camera and one lens, unencumbered by excessive gear, able to respond to the inevitable tug at my soul that results in a photograph.
